Make singing a shared experience
Shabbat meals are also a time to eat, talk and reconnect. Alongside those moments, plan clear opportunities for everyone to sing together. Without microphones, family participation helps the words and voices carry and allows the cantor to lead comfortably. The goal is a welcoming atmosphere, not an audience expected to remain silent throughout a meal.
Choose a varied repertoire
Discuss favourite songs and family traditions beforehand. Combine short, familiar refrains with Shabbat zemirot and longer piyutim, alongside Israeli songs and melodies that suit your guests. People do not need to know every verse: the ensemble can lead the verses and invite everyone into the chorus. Children and relatives can take part if they would enjoy it.
Prepare readable song sheets
Printed lyrics make less familiar songs easier to follow. Agree the versions and order with the cantor, use a readable type size and provide enough copies before Shabbat. For guests from abroad, selected transliterations or short explanations may help. Use texts you have permission to reproduce, or arrange permission where needed.
Leave room for conversation
Ask the venue to avoid noisy clearing during a central song or family blessing where practical. Close relatives can encourage others simply by joining in. An a cappella ensemble adds harmony and helps connect the tables, but it does not need to fill every moment. Comfortable breaks allow guests to enjoy their meal and return to the singing willingly.
